Jeff Grimes is not shy on enthusiasm.
Looking to turn around the power running game, Frank Beamer recently added the former Auburn offensive line coach to the staff at Virginia Tech in the same position.
After having a top-30 rushing offense in each of the past three seasons, the Hokies finished just 81st in rushing offense last season. Grimes' goal is very clear, even if it's hard to measure.
"I would start by telling you what my first objective is, and that's to develop the toughest offensive line in the ACC," Grimes said. "That happens, sometimes, sooner rather than later, sometimes a little bit later than you would like to as a coach, as I've moved around and coached a lot of offensive lines at a lot of different places. I have no knowledge of where they are right now. I think I've met two of the players so far, so I can't give you any idea in terms of where they are on a scale right now, and it's something that's hard to measure.
"But what I want to do is develop a group that's going to try to dominate the game from our position. I believe we're the tip of the spear, so to speak, the first into battle, and if we don't play the game with an aggressive approach, your offense is never going to have that demeanor. The first thing I'm going to do is sell that vision and instill that sense of toughness within a group. "
Grimes has been called an passionate recruiter, but he downplayed the joy he gets from it.
"I recognize that it's something that you've gotta do and be great at in order to win," Grimes said. "I have a passion for winning. I have a passion for football. A passion for recruiting? I don't know. It's a part of it. I would say that.
"What I do enjoy is getting out, getting to meet kids and their families and allowing them to see what it would be like to be a part of our family."
