When Tim Beckman was hired at Illinois, he was asked about the continuation of Camp Rantoul - Illinois' fall camp location in Rantoul, Ill. At the time, Beckman said he would look at the off-campus location and made a decision from there.

He ended up continuing the tradition. So, what has Beckman thought of his first few days in Rantoul?

"I love it. It reminds me of camp when I was a kid, for the Cleveland Browns, going out to camps," Beckman said. "I like utilizing this and think that they've done a fabulous job with the locker room."

Beckman was born in Ohio and his father worked for the Cleveland Browns in the early 1980s.

Jim Mora Jr., Doug Marrone, Skip Holtz, Derek Dooley and Todd Graham are the other coaches who take their teams off campus for part of camp.

This is the 13th year the Fighting Illini have used Camp Rantoul, but unlike previous years, camp will shift back to Champaign after a week. Beckman expressed his desire to surprise people and make some changes when he was hired. This seems like a good balance between some changes, while still utilizing the school's traditional means.

Illinois' final practice in Rantoul will take place on the morning of Aug. 12, with fan appreciation day scheduled for when the team returns to Champaign later in the day. All eight practices in Rantoul are open to the public. The practices in Champaign will be closed.

Illinois opens its season against Western Michigan at home on Sept. 1. The Illini have won bowl games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.
