Legendary college football coach Darrell Royal has died in Austin, according to the Associated Press.

Royal -- best known for his time at Texas, where the stadium bears his name - was 88 years old and suffered from Alzheimer's. Considered one of the game's early innovators, Royal coached Mississippi State, Washington and the Longhorns and was 184-60-5 as a head coach. He won three national titles and 11 Southwest Conference titles at Texas, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

Below is an old clip that gives you an idea of Royal's coaching style.

"Seventy five percent of tackling is morale, desire and courage," Royal says. "If a man likes to hit, the proper techniques can add the extra 25 percent to make a really effective tackler. If you have a real, hard-tackling, defensive football team, nobody is going to embarrass you. You are going to be in every game you play."
