Jerry Kill: We've got to catch up with basketball coaches

College basketball took a step forward this summer when new rules allowed coaches to make unlimited phone calls and send unlimited text messages to recruits who had finished their sophomore year of high school.

It's one of many rules changes Jerry Kill would like to see in college football.

Kill will sit on the AFCA rules committee next year, and talked about his ideas for rule changes in college football during his weekly press conference.

"The basketball coaches have done a good job of getting the phone calls, just get everybody on the same page, basketball and football," he said. "It would be a lot easier for the compliance people, get us all on the same page with the same rules and same amount of phone calls and text messaging and all that. We're all different and it would be good to get everybody on the same page."

Another rule Kill personally would like to see is allowing redshirted players to be able to play in a bowl game without losing eligibility, but that is probably far down the road.

"A lot of people have talked about if you did get in a bowl game is allowing those kids to play and not count it as a redshirt year," Kill said. "But it ain't going to happen this year. You'd like to have it happen, I can tell you that, because it makes a lot of sense because there's a lot of people going to bowl games all beat up. So there's some proactive movement in the coaching profession to see that happen."

Recruiting is obviously different in football than basketball if only because of the amount of players on a team, but Kill believes the football coaches need to catch up to their hardwood counterparts.

"The basketball coaches have done a great job, they really have, with their sport," he said. "Football coaches, we gotta get caught up, to be honest with you, because from recruiting, the whole thing, basketball is different than football is right now, and their group has done a great job of getting legislation passed through, and football we've gotta work on that at the coaches' convention."

Below is part of Kill's postgame press conference from last week's win.
