Posted by: Pete Roussel on January 23, 2012 All signs are pointing towards another interesting week of coaching movement. I'll be in Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl practices. Typically, a couple of hundred NFL coaches will be on hand in Mobile, along with most college coaches that lost their jobs this off-season. The college coaches go to network and some will actually interview for positions with NFL personnel. The Bucs, Raiders, and Colts will continue their coaching searches. Tampa Bay almost had their guy last night, but Chip Kelly decided to remain at Oregon. I'll be honest, it didn't surprise me that Kelly was involved in the Tampa Bay coaching search. Two months ago, I estimated that we would get to twenty-seven head coaching openings in college football this off-season. Twenty-five jobs have been filled. Last week, as I thought of scenarios that could push the number to twenty-seven, my gut told me that either Doug Marrone or Chip Kelly would have to land NFL job in order for us to get to twenty-seven. The will be a ton of NFL assistant coaching movement. Expect Jeff Fisher to continue naming assistants in St. Louis. Mike Mularkey will do the same in Jacksonville, although Mularkey has named the bulk of his staff. Derek Dooley could make a hire this week for the special teams coordinator position. I heard former Indianapolis Colts special teams coordinator Ray Rychleski talked with Dooley last week. With my high school quarterback Eli Manning ending the 49ers' season, don't be surprised if San Francisco assistant Bobby Engram joins the staff at Pitts under Paul Chryst. Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has one remaining job to fill. Doc Holliday has yet to fill the defensive backs job at Marshall. Bob Stoops could name a new linebackers coach this week. It could be Tish Kish or Tyrone Nix. As National Signing Day approaches, things ought to slow down beginning Sunday - Wednesday, but always expect a bunch of movement late next week. Coaches tend to accept jobs, but keep things quiet near signing day. Out of respect, most coaches wait to go public with information until after the high school athletes sign on the dotted line. ------------- You can follow me on twitter @CoachingSearch |
