Posted by: Pete Roussel on January 30, 2012 We're nearing National Signing Day, so typically the coaching movement slows down for 2-3 days. As always, there is another wave of coaching movement coming just after Wednesday. That's when you will see several college assistant coaches join NFL organizations. It happens every year. There will be a couple of coaches that accept NFL positions today and tomorrow, but the news remains silent until after recruits sign on the dotted line this Wednesday. So which jobs remain open at the college level? Rutgers will name a new head coach. Rutgers interim head coach Kyle Flood and FIU head coach Mario Cristobal have reportedly interviewed for the position. If Rutgers opens up the search, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman could be a candidate. Roman is a Jersey native, who happens to be a hot name right now. With the departure of Billy Gonzales to Illinois, LSU head coach Les Miles has yet to name a wide receivers coach. Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder has yet to hire a defensive coordinator to replace Chris Cosh, who recently accepted the same position at South Florida. Cosh will reunite with Skip Holtz. The two coaches worked together at South Carolina from 1999 - 2003. Air Force defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt has reportedly interviewed for the position, but there is a chance that Wallerstedt will remain with Troy Calhoun. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz has two positions to fill, defensive coordinator and defensive line. Replacing Norm Parker is no easy task and Ferentz could go in a number of directions with this hire. Ferentz, admittedly, has a different approach than some head coaches when replacing assistants. The defensive line and defensive coordinator positions have been open for quite some time. The special teams coordinator position at Stanford remains open. Not much information has surfaced about possible candidates to replace Brian Polian, who joined the staff at Texas A&M. At Utah, Kyle Whittingham has yet to name a replacement for offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who accepted the head coaching job at Hawaii. The running backs job remains open, as well. One position remains open at Penn State. Bill O'Brien could go in a number of directions, but don't be surprised if Ralph Friedgen ends up filling the position. With the departure of defensive coordinator Andy Buh, Nevada head coach Chris Ault needs to hire a new defensive coordinator. Jim McElwain has yet to fill a couple of positions on his staff at Colorado State. It's going to be interesting to see who lands the offensive line job. NC State has yet to hire a replacement for running backs coach Everett Sands, who recently joined Steve Spurrier's staff in the same capacity. Spurrier, meanwhile, will soon name a replacement for safeties coach Jeep Hunter, who was dismissed from the staff on Friday. It will be interesting to see if former Illinois defensive backs coach Mike Gillhamer enters the mix for the position. Houston head coach Tony Levine has yet to hire a wide receivers coach. With the Cougars' pass-happy offense, this is an important hire for Levine, who will likely wait until after National Signing Day to complete his staff. Rice head coach David Bailiff has yet to hire a defensive coordinator to replace Chuck Driesbach, who was dismissed after the season. The running backs job remains open, as well. Idaho head coach Robb Akey must fill the offensive line position. Akey's offensive line coach John McDonell recently joined the Tulane staff, where he will reunite with his good friend Eric Price. McDonell and Price coached together for a number of years at Washington State. Mike Riley still has a defensive backs job to fill at Oregon State. Of course, if FIU head coach Mario Cristobal lands the Rutgers job, the movement will continue like never before. We're already assured to have 26 programs with new head coaches next season. And always remember, there is another small wave of changes coming after National Signing Day on Wednesday.
