Posted by: Pete Roussel on February 22, 2012 When Skip Holtz accepted the head coaching job at South Florida before the 2010 season, he wanted Peter Vaas to coach the quarterbacks. The move surprised some coaches because Todd Fitch seemed like the natural fit. In addition to serving as the East Carolina offensive coordinator, Fitch coached the quarterbacks under Holtz from 2007 - 2009. He also coached the quarterbacks at UCONN from 1994 - 1998, at South Carolina in 2003, and Iowa State from 2004 - 2006. This week, Holtz made the decision to move Fitch backs to quarterbacks. Vaas will now coach the tight ends. Holtz told Tampa Bay Online, "It is easier coordinating from the quarterbacks because the quarterback is tied into every aspect of the offensive game plan. There are less layers, one less link of communication. From that standpoint, it's a positive, and I think it's something that Coach Fitch ultimately is going to feel more comfortable with.'' Additionally, Larry Scott is shifting from tight ends to running backs, while University of San Diego wide receivers coach Jerome Pathon has joined the staff as wide receivers coach. Holtz said, "I think it will make this more efficient. But it wasn't like I was trying to correct an inefficiency.'' South Florida averaged 432 yards per game in 2011. The Bulls also averaged 29 points per game, but finished just 5-7. In Holtz' first year at South Florida, the team averaged 309 yards per game and 24 points per game. The 2012 schedules begins with Chattanooga, at Nevada, TBA, at Ball State, and Florida State. Holtz is hoping quarterback B.J. Daniels takes his game to another level. He's also looking for a team that competes at a high level like in yesterday's tug of war drill: -------------------------- You can follow me on twitter @CoachingSearch Next article - Justin Fuente: We won't be a frou frou, spread, dink & dunk team |
